ESPN’s 2009 ESPY Awards: ‘Environmentality’ & Michael Phelps Win Big, Carmelo Anthony Hangs Out

Last night’s ESPYS proved that Michael Phelps (Best Male Athlete) isn’t the only athlete who’s fond of the green stuff. This year, the ESPYS pulled out all the stops to practice a term they have dubbed environmentality. Changes were made in all aspects of the production in order to minimize the impact this event had on the planet, starting with the all-important red carpet. This re-useable red carpet, which tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams strutted down was made from 51,000 plastic soda bottles. To further reduce the carbon foot print made by this awards show, the ESPYS promised to plant a tree for every person who attended – maybe two for captain of the best team winner, Kobe Bryant, who at 6’6 may leave a just a slightly larger carbon footprint than the rest of us.
